How to find the BPM and key of a beat

  1. Choose the beat

Pick an audio file. The tool reads up to 90 seconds from the middle, where the groove is steadiest.

  2. Read the estimate

You get the tempo with its half or double time reading, and the most likely key with a runner-up.

  3. Check by ear

Tap along to confirm the tempo, and hum the root note over the beat to confirm the key.

Use the numbers to write and match

Tempo and key help you pick a flow and line up a hook.

  • Trap and drill often sit around 130–150 BPM, counted at half time as 65–75.
  • Boom bap usually lives around 85–95 BPM, a comfortable tempo for dense bars.
  • Minor keys feel darker; if the estimate says minor, a sung hook in that key will blend in.
  • Beats with few melodic notes give rough key guesses. Trust your ear when the label says so.
